About
Hi, my name is Ivy
I am currently undertaking a PhD in sociology & anthropology at the University of Newcastle, located in Muloobinba on Awabakal country (Newcastle Australia).
I’ve been interested in and following the development of Solarpunk since probably around 2016. I’ve also been involved with environmental, social justice, anti-capitalist, and anti-colonial activism in my local and regional area for a similar length of time.
My research aims to investigate the phenomenon of Solarpunk as an emerging movement of the Anthropocene. It seeks to uncover in what ways Solarpunk represents a movement and how it interacts with other movements and locally grounded projects that align with its principles and seek collaborative and creative responses to climate change and social injustice.
There is some academic literature on Solarpunk as a literary genre, but this project is focused on the under investigated aspect of Solarpunk as a movement encompassing politics, futurity, belonging, and practice.
The project encompasses ethnographic participant observation in online Solarpunk ‘spaces’ and groups, close reading of solarpunk articles and literature, engagement with a range of solarpunk-aligned practices, and interviews with solarpunks from around the globe.
I will be updating this website as the project develops. This will include updates on research findings, and other interesting resources and things I find along the way that seem relevant.
